Woods in 'competitive shape' after Masters practice round

MIAMI - TIGER Woods described himself as in 'competitive shape' for next week's US Masters after playing a practice round at a rain-sodden Augusta National Golf Club earlier this week.

The American world number five, a four-time champion at Augusta National, was surprised by how long the par-72 layout played and noticed subtle changes on the greens at the 11th and 17th.

Bruce fury at Angeleri 'racist' claim

LONDON - SUNDERLAND manager Steve Bruce angrily denied allegations of racism on Thursday after Argentinian defender Marcos Angeleri claimed he had been overlooked because of his nationality.

Angeleri was quoted in South American media as saying that Bruce did not pick him for the Black Cats because he was not English.

Premier League clubs vow to improve behaviour

LONDON - THE 20 Premier League clubs have agreed to improve the behaviour of players and managers towards match officials next season after conceding on Thursday that things had got out of hand.

Earlier this month Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson was given a five-game touchline ban for post-match criticism of officials which included the comment, 'You want a fair referee'.

Federer into semis, Sharapova in final

MIAMI - MARIA Sharapova rallied to reach the women's final of the WTA and ATP Masters hardcourt tournament here on Thursday, while Roger Federer barely worked at all to reach the men's semi-finals.

Sharapova, seeded 16th, overcame her slow start by winning 11 straight games en route to a 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 semi-final victory over Germany's Andrea Petkovic.

Remy Ong retains title in Riyadh

RIYADH - SINGAPORE'S Remy Ong successfully defended the 5th Kingdom International Open title after defeating another former champion, Shaker Al-Hassan of UAE in the all-lefty title match, SingaporeBowling said in a press release.

'This is my first back-to-back title in my bowling career and I feel great,' said the 32-year-old national bowler, Remy Ong after receiving the top prize of US$25,000 (S$31,520) as champion. 'When I was knocked out from the top 5 qualifying bracket, I thought it would be tough to make it in the second last squad on Monday. I'm glad I managed it otherwise I may not be bowling in the elimination rounds.'

Fish advances, earns top US ranking

MIAMI - MARDY Fish ousted an ailing David Ferrer to reach the semi-finals of the US$9 million (S$11.3 million) WTA and ATP Masters Series tournament here on Wednesday, and insured he'll become the top-ranked American on the ATP Tour.

Fish, seeded 14th, defeated the sixth-seeded Spaniard 7-5, 6-2. While Ferrer had plenty of praise for Fish's strong performance on serve, he said he couldn't really rise to the challenge because of a stomach ailment.

13-year-old karting driver appeals doping ban

Semifinal score: India 116-2 after 20 overs

MOHALI (India) - INDIA was 116-2 after 20 overs in the World Cup semifinal against Pakistan. Sachin Tendulkar was 46 not out and Gautan Gambhir was the second wicket to fall for 27.

Tendulkar had four lives, however. He was given out by Simon Taufel lbw in the 11th over but the decision was overturned on referral. The next ball he just survived a stumping appeal.
