UNLIKE many of her peers, Singapore Sports School (SSP) track and field starlet T. Piriyah was not hand-picked by the school's scouts who help sniff out talent at the primary school level competitions.

Instead, the 18-year-old was unearthed through selection trials held during the school's open house in 2004. A relative unknown, the then-Anderson Primary pupil was ranked a lowly 28th in the 400m, clocking 75.92sec.
